Horse Hair Pottery
The unique marble design of Horsehair pottery is created from applying actual horsehair to the finished greenware pottery piece. Immediately after the prepared clay pot has been fired, a thin layer of horsehair is artistically spread over the top of the pottery. During this process timing is very important. Precise temperatures are required to allow the horsehair to correctly burn into the clay, producing the unique marble effect. The patterns are always varied, each on is different from the next. After the pot has completely cooled, the Navajo artist then cleans the piece a second time and finishes with a high polish. The horsehair is gathered from horses during the grooming process. No animal has been harmed in the making of this pottery.
