DEATH VALLEY NATIONAL PARK, August 8, 2008 - When the historic Furnace Creek Inn reopens October 10 after its annual hot-weather hiatus, it will be sporting some new furnishings and fixtures.

Operator Xanterra Parks & Resorts took advantage of the seasonal closure to implement an extensive interior enhancement. The project includes new furniture for the lobby, lobby bar, guest room verandas and front lobby patio; 32-inch flat-screen televisions in all 66 guest rooms; bathroom fixtures and vanity lighting; box springs, mattresses, bedspreads, coverlets and throw pillows; draperies; luggage racks; guest room art and floral arrangements; in-room radios with IPOD docking; towels, hairdryers and other in-room amenities.

"Although the furniture is new, it still reflects the elegance of the 1930s when the Inn was newly opened," said Phil Dickinson, director of sales and marketing for the Furnace Creek Inn & Ranch Resort. "Even though the resort was closed for the season there was a great deal of activity to get it ready for the fall and winter, the most popular season in Death Valley."

Room rates at the Furnace Creek Inn range from $305 to $425 per night. The Inn is open through mid-May and includes a restaurant, gift shop, spring-fed swimming pool, tennis courts, lush gardens and conference and banquet facilities. Xanterra's year-round operations in the California park include the 224-room Furnace Creek Ranch, 18-hole Furnace Creek Golf Course, two restaurants, saloon, general store, spring-fed swimming pool, tennis courts, 3,000-foot airstrip, the Borax Museum and a service station.

The Furnace Creek Inn wasn't the only active work site this summer.  While temperatures were lingering in the low 100-teens, workmen were putting the finishing touches on the tourism industry's largest-ever solar photovoltaic (PV) system, a one-megawatt, five-acre project designed to generate one-third of the electricity needs for Xanterra's Furnace Creek operations, including the Furnace Creek Ranch, Furnace Creek Inn, Golf Course, restaurants and retail operations.

Under construction for six months, the elaborate system is situated in a secluded area surrounded by the Furnace Creek Golf Course. Xanterra's facility is one of the largest privately owned PV energy systems in the country and easily the largest in the U.S. tourism industry. Xanterra fully owns the system and the energy it produces.
