Death Valley Lodging: Overview and Introduction

The Furnace Creek Resort is situated in a lush oasis surrounded by the vast and arid desert of Death Valley National Park, California - just 120 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada and 275 miles northeast of Los Angeles, California.

This is one resort with two hotels - the historic, 4-diamond, 66 room Inn at Furnace Creek and the more family oriented 224 room Ranch at Furnace Creek.

The Inn at Furnace Creek

An elegant hideaway for more than 83 years, the Inn at Furnace Creek, a 4-diamond resort, still pampers every guest. It's the perfect place to reclaim your senses as you relax near the spring-fed pool, stroll through palm gardens to the melody of the natural springs, shop for unique items in the gift shop, watch a glorious sunset from one of the quaint stone patios or enjoy a cool drink from Stargazers Deck.

You can also play tennis, horseback ride or take a romantic carriage ride. When it comes to golf, you can tee it up 214 feet below sea level on an 18-hole par 70 course, redesigned by noted golf course architect Perry Dye.

Opened in 1927 by the Pacific Borax Company, this resort serves as a fitting tribute to the historical riches of California's past. Enjoy some of the world's best hiking or take a drive down Artist's Drive as it meanders through magnificent and exotic rock formations of pink, lavender, emerald, brown and purple. Head up to Dante's View for a look at Badwater and Death Valley from 5,475 feet above the valley's floor; every detail comes with a story.

The adobe bricks that make up the mission-style architecture were created on site by Native Americans. Furnishings and decor in the lobby and bar draw upon the classic look of the 1930's.

Special Note: The Inn at Furnace Creek is available to guests from mid-October through mid-May. From mid-May through mid-October all operations are consolidated at the Ranch at Furnace Creek.

The Ranch at Furnace Creek

Welcoming guests since 1933, the Ranch at Furnace Creek offers accommodations in a casual, family-like setting, the perfect complement to the classic elegance of the Inn at Furnace Creek.

Hear the clatter of horse-drawn wagons as they roll through the Ranch and bring you back to the Old West. Stop off at the Corkscrew Saloon for a cool drink and a game of darts. Ride a horse, take a hike or challenge your kids to a game of horseshoes. Visit the General Store for a quick snack and some great gifts. Check out the antique stagecoaches, mining tools and steam locomotive at the Borax Museum.

As you wander around the western-themed grounds, you'll feel like you've been transported back to the 1800's when this site was established as a working ranch. Yet, you'll enjoy the amenities of modern civilization, like quiet, recently refurbished rooms, a Golf Pro Shop, a spring-fed swimming pool, tennis courts, a children's playground and the National Park Service Visitor's Center - which is just a stone's throw away.
